community newsReform needed to stop HIVMonday, 17 October 2011 The reality is stark. There are 54 countries in the British Commonwealth... and a staggering 41 of these countries still have laws that make homosexuality a criminal offence. Drug users in some Commonwealth countries face the death penalty. Criminal laws in some Commonwealth countries can result in corporal punishment for sex workers. The result of laws like these is that those most at risk of contracting HIV are unable to access key prevention services and life-saving treatment. The result of this is simple: more people are infected, and - ultimately - more people will die. This October there is a chance for the Commonwealth to do something about it, and you can help this happen by signing a petition to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
