Phil Starr dies
Brighton mourns the loss of legendary cabaret performer

Phil Starr dies

Wednesday, 19 October 2005

It is with great sadness that we report Phil Starr's death yesterday afternoon. Phil was hugely loved by so many people in Brighton and far beyond. There was a great sense of shock around town last night as people try to come to terms with such a loss.

Everyone's sympathies will, we're sure, go out to his partner, Perry, and his close friends.

We invite you to add your thoughts and comments to this page.

I was shocked to hear that someone who was so alive and sparkling on Sunday was gone by Wednesday. Phil was a consumate Starr and a gentleman. I have been a great fan for 27 years since I first saw him working with Mrs Shufflewick at the Black Cap in Camden Town on a Sunday lunchtime, and then at many venues across London. I worked at the Cap later and got to know him and Perry a little. He was truly an institution. Lets all make sure his send off reflects the joy laughter and pleasure he has given for so many years. He was used to playing to packed houses lets pack the streets on the 6th of November. There's a new Starr in Heaven. Sleep well dear.

To Perry you were worried about leaving him behind, I am so sorry love Adrian

Many, especially those in London and the South, have watched a drag show at some stage. Unfortunately a marvelous entertainer passed away last Monday which leaves us with a void.

Phil Starr was an excellent performer who was well known and liked, especially in the south, although he did also perform in the Midlands and in the North. His drag act was always live and never mimed.

Phil Starr gave his time voluntarily to many fundraising events on behalf of Voluntary Organisations and was a backbone of our community.

Phil Starr was also a fantastic supporter of St John Ambulance - Regency Division and appeared annually at our fund raising shows - without charging any fee. He frequently made reference to our work during his act at other venues which was amazing free publicity for us; he was always generous and kind with his mentions. His support was a main source of our Ambulance funding.

Craig said earlier that His funeral is at 12 noon on Sunday 6th November at St Mary's Church, Kemp Town, Brighton. An enormous attendance is expected and deserved.

Phil, you will never be surpassed either on off the boards.
Wherever you are now, make 'em laugh.

WARNING. I am lead to believe that Phil's funeral will be held on the same day as the 'Veteran Car Rally' (Old Crocks Rally) which finishes at Palace Pier from 12 noon onwards.

There will be a lot of congestion on our roads on 6th November, especially around the Church and R-Bar. Please leave extended periods for travel and don't expect parking to be easy as thousands descend upon Brighton to watch this event. The A23 southbound will be congested.

I didn't know Phil on a personal level - although sometimes I felt like I knew as many of his gags as well as he did - but it didn't stop me going back and seeing him time after time. The best stand up comic around, and not just on the cabaret scene.
