Phil Starr dies
Brighton mourns the loss of legendary cabaret performer

Phil Starr dies

Wednesday, 19 October 2005

It is with great sadness that we report Phil Starr's death yesterday afternoon. Phil was hugely loved by so many people in Brighton and far beyond. There was a great sense of shock around town last night as people try to come to terms with such a loss.

Everyone's sympathies will, we're sure, go out to his partner, Perry, and his close friends.

We invite you to add your thoughts and comments to this page.

It was a very big shock and I, for one, will miss him very much. Favourite gags? The magic table. Favourite song? Bizarre in Cairo? Maybe not. Bye Phil! Thanks for many, many hours of laughter!

Very saddened to hear the news today.

Phil Starr was simply one of the greatest cabaret talents around. I have many great and fun memories of an extraordinary talent.

My sympathies go out to his partner, Perry, and his close friends.

He will be sadly missed.

A really big talent and a REALLY nice man. How sad as he'd just embarked on a new venture. Too many years to recount, what will the cabaret scene be without him? Brighton needs to mark his passing in a BIG way!!!

It's not often drag queens are lost for words, but yesterday was one of them.
Phil Starr was a master of his craft and HUGELY respected on the scene by all his colleagues, including myself.
Phil was not only responsible for making thousands upon thousands of people laugh for over 50 years, but he was the man ( along with partner, Perry), who turned the 2 Brewers in Clapham, into a gay pub, 25 years ago next year.
I have so many happy memories of Phil, on and off stage, because he was a man you couldn't help but like. I last saw him in Tesco's buying bread for the sandwiches for the punters at his piano bar night. "You've got to keep the punters happy, dear"
Well Phil Starr did just that and he will be sorely missed.
God bless you Phil and thanks for the laughs!

Phil will be missed terribly by me and the whole of the Brighton community...

It was only on Monday night in R-bar I had a laugh and a joke with him as he was heading home after a terrific night with Kitty Litter....He made me laugh even then, proving what a great man he was. Our thoughts are with all those who were close to him....We'll meet again Mike xx

My first ever visit to a gay pub was Legends, when I was 21. Phil Star was on stage, and to be honest, he scared the shit outa me! I come from a small village in the middle of nowhere, where the most exciting thing to happen was the street lights turning on!

A few years later I met up with Phil thru Taz, and discovered what a genuine, funny and down to earth man he was. He will be sadly missed by everyone on and off the scene. But I'm sure he'll be 'up there' laughing and joking around with the likes of Dockyard and Regina! The Old Bazaar In Cairo hasn't closed, just changed location!

We Love You Phil XXX

Oh My God! I'm shocked to hear the news. I'm so sorry! I met Phil Starr at the Revenge tent at Pride 2005 and I remarked that I loved one of his outfits. He was so sweet to me and said he would help me to put the dress on!

Very very sad to hear this.

Au revoir Mr Phil Starr.

I've been trying to think of something to write here, but it's so hard.

I didn't know Phil well enough to be able to say anything very personal but I think all I wanted to say is that I'm sure he'll leave a hole in many people's lives that will be hard to fill.

I'll always be a bit sad that I never really knew him or that I didn't get to see him more often. When I did get the pleasure of seeing him perform it was always a treat... and like watching classic episodes of your favourite comedy show - he just got better the more times you watched him! I'll always be able to smile as I remember his distinctive, wavering voice joking with the audience...

Lots of love and warm thoughts and smiles to everyone who remembers Phil Starr fondly... x
